Jóhann Jóhannsson 1969-2018 — a closer listen, a tribute by Richard Allen

to commemorate Jóhann Jóhannsson’s early death, we invite you to read Richard Allen’s tribute on A Closer Listen. as you may know, the pond and A Closer Listen share more or less the same taste for music, especially when it goes to ambient and post rock music. and especially when Richard Allen takes up his pen to sublime the music we also enjoy.

One of our favorite composers, Jóhann Jóhannsson, passed away on Friday in Berlin at the age of 48, and we already miss him. In addition to producing some of the finest music of our time, he was also a wonderful conductor and humble performer. His notes speak directly to the heart, which is why our hearts []

the pond was devastated as we heard about the death that the wonderful, unique, magnificent Jóhann Jóhannsson. we had the great chance to meet him personally in 2004 in Reykjavik after the release of his very first, already brilliant, album, Engläborn, which had kept us company on our road tour in iceland.

the loss of this incomparable composer is pretty disheartening, but his music will keep our soul and body together, possibly until the end of time.

APTBS announce Pinned

oh joy, A Place To Bury Strangers released today a new song on their bandcamp page entitled Never Coming Back that announced Pinned, a new album coming out april 13rd via Dead Oceans. any enlightened ears will for sure notice the female voice contributing to Ackerman’s usual chocked (mesmerizing) phrasing – a voice that belongs to Lia Simone Braswell, APTBS’s new drummer.

explaining Braswell’s arrival in the band, Ackerman pointed it out (that)

“being a band for ten years, it’s hard to keep things moving forward. i see so many bands that have been around and they’re a weaker version of what they used to be. this band is anti-that. we try to push ourselves constantly, with the live shows and the recordings. we always want to get better. you’ve got to dig deep and take chances, and sometimes, i questioned that. it took really breaking through to make it work. i think we did that.”

Pinned‘s both LP and CD bundles can already be pre-ordered here and here. the tracklist so far is the following:

1. Never Coming Back
2. Execution
3. There’s Only One Of Us
4. Situations Changes
5. Too Tough To Kill
6. Frustrated Operator
7. Look Me In The Eye
8. Was It Electric
9. I Know I’ve Done Bad Things
10. Act Your Age
11. Attitude
12. Keep Moving On

as usual, the band will tour extensively in the USA and in Europe, with as essential stop at the pond on May 7th. all the tour dates are available on Dead Oceans website.

and, last but not least, Never Coming Back exists also under the form of a video directed by Oliver Ackermann himself and Ebru Yildiz.

No Age’s Send Me

No Age’s Randy Randall and Dean Allen Spunt unveiled Snares Like a Haircut, a new album released a few days ago on Drag City.

taken from this new upper-class noise-rock record, Send Me shows that No Age’s witty eloquence is still in great shape. the video was directed by Jonn Herschend and the connoisseurs will recognize both Spunt and Randall in the leading roles.

at the end of february, the band will start an extensive tour in both the USA and Europe, so be prepared to welcome them in the pond on march 22nd. Snares Like a Haircut can be purchased here, here and here.

Jean Jean’s Froidepierre

bang, bang, here comes the rewarding! we had been expecting them for long and the refreshing, amazing, bewitching Jean Jean are finally back!

the track Aozora is a perfect symbiosis of dreamy and joyful excitement, which is taken from Froidepierre, the band’s second album expected on 23rd february on Heads Records. the video was filmed by Maxime Leyravaud & Jean Jean and edited by Gregory Hoepffner.

the album title Froidepierre (cold rock) refers to the name of the alpine cottage where the band recorded, surrounded by especially cold rocks, and a luxuriant wood through which the light could hardly enter.

this possibly luminous, new record can be already preorder here, oh joy!

Bibio’s Phantom Brickworks

Stephen Wilkinson, better known under the stage name Bibio, announced the forthcoming release of Phantom Brickworks, a nine-track collection of mostly improvised musical pieces expected on 3rd november on Warp. you are invited to preview Phantom Brickworks III and Phantom Brickworks III (edit) and follow Bibio among dreamy autumn landscapes provided by the artist himself, who directed a spectral video for the occasion.

“I don’t believe in ghosts but I do believe places can be haunted by meaning. Places change, not always for the better and not always by natural, benevolent or politically sound means. A place can be charged with atmosphere because of what it has been through or what it has been.”

Bibio supervised also the making of the limited edition of Phantom Brickworks, a double vinyl with inner and outer sleeves printed using a hand-inked letterpress, which is unfortunately already out of stock. however, you may pre-order more widely available formats, including a standard edition of the double vinyl, here or here.

Behind the Shadow Drops

Behind the Shadow Drops is the new solo project of Takaakira ‘Taka’ Goto, founding guitarist of the fantastic instrumental band MONO. formed in 2016, the project integrates many different forms of music, most notably ambient, trip-hop and other minimal musical elements, and will soon give birth to a first album named H a r m o n I c.

expected on 22th september on Temporary Residence, the album features drums, percussion and programming by John McEntire (Tortoise and The Sea And The Cake) who also mixed the album, as well the fabulous Helen Money, a very impressive rock cellist, who toured with Russian Circles last year.

the first single Positive Shadow, Negative Light directed by Julien Levy offers us an elegant spectral journey under the stars.

you may pre-order H a r m o n i c  by clicking on the above album cover.

Hiss Spun

the sumptuous Chelsea Wolfe is treating us with a new video entitled 16 Psyche, a second excerpt taken from her sixth album Hiss Spun, out on 22nd september on Sargent House. you will probably notice the presence of Troy Van Leeuwen (Queens Of The Stone Age’s sensational guitarist) who supports Wolfe on lead guitar. Hiss Spun features also bandmate Ben Chisholm on bass, piano and electronics, and drummer Jess Gowrie (from Happy Fangs), a long-time companion who reunites with the goth-folk songwriter for the occasion.

the deep-howling voice of Aaron Turner (singer for Isis) also accompanies Wolfe’s childish vocal part on Vex, the first single unveiled at the beginning of the month.

we invite you to read the enlightening interview that Wolfe gave to Noisey, in which she unfolds Hiss Spun‘s genesis. the new album can be preordered here.

Nothing @ Amoeba Green Room Session

Nothing, as if the band was to perform an acoustic set in your bedroom, well, almost. the quartet performed an intimate, very moving, live session in the green room at Amoeba Hollywood in last february.
a good occasion to finger the band’s spleen and beauty.

MULL of OA

mysterious projects are always a thrilling experience, especially when they pair with music.

tomorrow, on the 31st october, MULL of OA will release their first album Rainy Days Friends Bring Me The Horizon on IMANCE.

as we got shaken by the amazing disquieting piano line and fineness of Chaos Lilla/Caol Ila, we got in touch with MULL of OA to know a little more about them. in this specific case, “them” refer to an intimate encounter. an unexpected rendez-vous between a (wo)man and a piano, on a scottish island called islay. a stroke of good fortune in a disused, deconsecrated church close to lagavulin, where a (wo)man met up with a piano, which beautiful, inspiring sound convinced him/her to found MULL of OA, name of the wild and tempestuous western tip of the island.  MULL of OA tells us that she/he first chased the visitors out of the church before recording improvised pieces, improvised moments of intimacy of a new-born musician. an unsuspected one-(wo)man band born last summer while travelling on this piece of land.

as his/her fingers skate on the piano keys for the first time, MULL of OA had no idea that it would give rise to a musical project. without pretending being a pianist, the fingers started to improvise, inspired by the intrinsic qualities of the piano. playing the piano’s valuable, but also imperfect, notes — playing this piano, and not any other one. MULL of OA points it out: “I have played on other pianos since then, and, for the moment, I haven’t found any other instrument with any comparable endearing nature”.

uncertain of the follow-up of the project, MULL of OA is however ready to release new improvisation albums to show listeners how the (wo)man is willing to change as she/he learns the piano further. “Yes, it a genuine project. I started to take piano lessons as I came back from Scotland.”

so, just before the official release of Rainy Days Friends Bring Me The Horizon, we are happy to introduce you to MULL of OA’s captivating music. the video of Chaos Lilla/Caol Ila, which offers a terrific mysterious echo to the piece, was created by Rodolphe Cobetto-Caravanes and Baptiste Sibony.

an authentic masterwork, both musically and visually.
